Privacy Policy — Do I Eat This?
Effective October 3, 2026 · Published by SEE Wellness
The short version: this app does not collect, transmit, or share any of your personal information.Do I Eat This? ("the app") is an educational food reference and the companion app to the book D.I.E.T.? Do I Eat This?, published by SEE Wellness ("we", "us"). This policy explains, in plain language, what information the app handles.
What the app does not do
The app contains no advertising, no analytics, no tracking, and no sign-in. It has no user accounts. It does not use any third-party analytics or advertising SDKs. It makes no requests to our servers, because we do not operate any servers for this app — apart from the lookups described below, the app works entirely offline.
Barcode scanning (the Scan tab)
When you scan or type a product barcode, the app sends only that barcode number to the public, community-run Open Food Facts database (world.openfoodfacts.org) to look up the product's name and ingredient list. The request is anonymous: no account, no device identifier, no location, and nothing about you is sent — there is no way to link a barcode lookup to a person. The camera is used only to read the numbers under the bars; it never takes, stores, or transmits a picture.
Your recent-scans list is kept in the app's private storage on your device, like everything else, and is never uploaded to us or to anyone else.
Photographing a plate
The Scan tab can also photograph a meal. The photo is sent for AI analysis to estimate the foods, portions, and nutrition on the plate. The request is anonymous, exactly like a barcode lookup: no account, no device identifier, no location, nothing about you. The photo is analyzed and then discarded — it is not stored on your device, and we never receive a copy. Only the text estimate stays on your screen, and it is saved to your device only if you log it in your journal.
What stays on your phone
The app lets you keep a few personal things to make the reference your own:
- the allergens you choose to be warned about,
- your starred favorites and the foods you avoid,
- your own private note on any food,
- your recent barcode scans,
- your food journal — the meals you log, how each day felt, and your day notes (a logged plate keeps only its text estimate, never the photo), and
- your light/dark appearance choice.
All of this is stored only on your device, in the app's private storage that other apps cannot read. It is never uploaded to us or to anyone else. We have no ability to see it, and no mechanism to receive it. You can remove it at any time by uninstalling the app or clearing the app's storage in your device settings.
The one device-level exception to know about
If you use your phone's standard backup — iPhone iCloud Backup — the app's data, including your picks and notes, may be included in the encrypted backup your phone makes to your own Apple account. This is your device's backup feature, not ours; it is governed by Apple's privacy policy, and we never receive a copy.
Health information
Food marks in the app describe how foods are classified in the educational materials the app was built from. Nothing in the app is medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Because we operate no servers and receive no data, we never hold any health information about you — there is nothing about you to protect on our side, because there is no "our side".
Changes to this policy
If the app ever changes in a way that affects this policy, we will update this page and the app's listing before the change ships.
